We are delighted to announce that the works of acclaimed Canadian composer Samy Moussa are available through Zinfonia.

Berlin-based Samy Moussa pursues a busy international career of composing and conducting, and has received premieres from the Vienna Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Dutch National Opera and Ballet, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, among others. His notable awards include the Paul Hindemith Prize in 2017 and the Ernst von Siemens Composers’ Prize in 2013.

Compositions available on Zinfonia include the oratorio Antigone, Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, the hymn for orchestra Adgilis Deda and concertos for flute, trombone, and violin.

Fennica Gehrman has acquired Uusinta Publishing's catalogue

Fennica Gehrman has acquired Uusinta Publishing Company’s catalogue as from 1 January 2026. It consists of some 200 works by contemporary Finnish composers such as Outi Tarkiainen, Sebastian Fagerlund, Ralf Gothóni and Osmo Tapio Räihälä. During its 25 years of existence, Uusinta (meaning “replay” and “newest”) created a valued and compact catalogue mainly of chamber works. Pedagogical music also played an important role alongside music of today and modern Finnish classics of the 20th century, composer Lauri Toivio has been the primus motor of Uusinta and the editor and graphic designer of its publications.

Launch of the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music’s “Fleisher 50” on Zinfonia

The Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music at the Free Library of Philadelphia has launched its presence on Zinfonia with an initial selection of 50 carefully curated titles, including Fleisher Critical Editions and Fleisher Critical Performance Editions. These works were produced by the Fleisher Collection team and reflect the most up-to-date research on underrepresented or underplayed composers, including Louis W. Ballard, Radie Britain, William Henry Fry, Ruth Gipps, and María Teresa Prieto. Carefully chosen to complement Zinfonia’s existing catalog, these works bring important repertoire to the platform that has not previously been represented.

The Fleisher Collection began in 1909 when Edwin Adler Fleisher (1877–1959) founded the first training orchestra in the United States. Originally known as the Little Symphony Club, the ensemble welcomed participants of all genders and races free of charge. Over the next two decades, Fleisher invested between $10,000 and $20,000 annually to provide music for the Club’s biweekly rehearsals and annual concerts. In 1929, he donated his rapidly growing collection to the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Between 1934 and 1943, Fleisher co-sponsored a WPA Music Project focused on creating performance sets from unpublished manuscripts by Pan American composers, effectively doubling the size of the collection. He remained deeply involved in its growth and promotion throughout his life and established an endowment to ensure its continued expansion.

Today, the Fleisher Collection stands as the largest and most unique lending library of orchestral performance sets in the world, continuing to grow and serve musicians well into the 21st century.

Owen Orchestration produces critical-performing editions of Arnold Bax's orchestral works. Bax was one of Britain's finest orchestral and chamber-music composers of the early 20th-century with luscious harmonies and superb orchestration. Instrumental parts are available to buy or hire, sometimes for the first time in their history, by musical organisations and the general public alike. His epic tone poem 'Spring Fire' and his monumental piano concerto 'Symphonic Variations' are the first two projects. Upcoming projects include 'Tintagel' (his most famous work) and Symphonies No.2 and No.7.

New at HUG: Kurt Leimer – Piano Concerto No. 2

Kurt Leimer's Piano Concerto No. 2 is now available from Hug Musikverlag.

Thanks to various recommendations, including one from Furtwängler, the piano virtuoso, Mozarteum professor, and composer Kurt Leimer (1920–1973) enjoyed an excellent education in Berlin at the age of sixteen. He wrote a total of four piano concertos for himself and was able to count on the collaboration of conductor and educator Kurt Overhoff for the elaboration of the score.

The Second Piano Concerto was written in 1947 and, in its three movements, demonstrates Leimer's sensational piano technique, his distinctive sense of sound, and a stylistic openness that combines late Romantic, neo-Baroque, and jazz elements. The first edition of the score, including the piano reduction and orchestral parts, published by HUG Musikverlage, is based on the manuscripts preserved in the musicological archive of the Zurich Central Library.

In addition to historical recordings with the composer as soloist, the concerto has been re-recorded by the Schweizer Fonogramm label with pianist Robert Bily.

Hermann Suter - Le Laudi die San Francesco d`Assisi - chamber version by Urs Stäuble

In the summer of 1923, after a strenuous concert season, Hermann Suter travelled to the Engadin, where he moved into a private apartment with his wife on the Silsersee lake. Here, in the tranquillity of the mountains, he found rest and relaxation, although he was not idle: in about two months he composed the oratorio Le Laudi di San Francesco d'Assisi. He may have already had the basic ideas for the conception beforehand, and the orchestration and final elaboration may have followed, but the actual composition of the work took place in one go and he did not rest until it was complete.

Suter dedicated the work to "his" Basler Gesangverein, and at its centenary celebrations in June 1924, he premiered it in Basel Minster, where it was enthusiastically greeted and prompted subsequent performances all over the world.

Although Le Laudi is still performed from time to time today, the large personnel and financial outlay required for a performance is beyond the capabilities of most choirs: the original score includes 23 wind instruments in addition to extensive percussion, celesta, harp, piano and organ, which requires a large string section and a correspondingly large choir.

Based on the assumption that the organ is ultimately a wind instrument, I have written a chamber version that gives the relevant wind parts to the organ. A string quintet, whose instrumentation is based on the size of the choir, and a percussionist (timpani, glockenspiel and tam-tam) complete the instrumental ensemble. The vocal parts (solos, choir and children's voices) remain unchanged, so that they can be sung from the existing piano reduction published by Hug Musikverlage.

May my chamber version also make Le Laudi accessible to smaller choirs, this moving hymn of praise with the old Italian text by Francis of Assisi, which touches on the first and last things, and with Hermann Suter's music, which looks back on centuries of European music history from the late Romantic perspective.

Top Award to Tõnu Kõrvits for Two New Works

The Estonian Cultural Endowment presented its 2025 annual prizes and lifetime achievement awards at a ceremony held at the Ukuaru Concert Hall in Rakvere. Among the recipients was one of Estonia’s most internationally performed composers, Tõnu Kõrvits, who received the Grand Prize in Composition in recognition of an exceptional creative year and his new works Aroha and The Seasons.

Aroha is a double concerto for violin, piano, and chamber orchestra. The composer has said that a text he encountered at an exhibition dedicated to Māori culture in New Zealand stayed with him, waiting for the right moment to become music. The concerto consists of three movements and follows a fairly classical structure. As befits the genre, the double concerto is virtuosic, yet beneath the fast rhythms, double stops, and clusters, a tenderness resonates.

Tõnu Kõrvits’s The Seasons is a double concerto for violin, cello, and chamber orchestra. The work follows a clear four-movement structure, beginning with summer and ending with spring. The instrumentation also includes a harpsichord; however, the soundscape is not simplistic neo-Baroque, but rather harmonically rich and inventively orchestrated contemporary music.

With a distinctive style characterized by jazz inspired, rhythmically driven themes, her work has been praised internationally as “undoubtedly the crowd pleaser of the evening” (YourObserver), “dynamic and full of vitality” (The Korea Defense Daily), showcasing “colorful orchestration” (NewsBrite), and evoking “elegant wonder” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).

Recent highlights include the premiere of Sohn’s guitar concerto with the Albany Symphony featuring guitarist Bokyung Byun, followed by a sinfonietta performance at the 2025 Tanglewood Music Festival. She also composed a large scale ballet for BalletCollective, premiered at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City in collaboration with choreographer Alysa Pires and visual artist Linn Meyers. Additional projects include a cello concerto commissioned by the University of Iowa and recorded by the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, and Galaxy Back to You for the Balourdet Quartet, commissioned following their Avery Fisher Career Grant win and featured on their debut CD.

The NGO Estonian Music Information Centre (EMIC) was established in 1995 by 15 Estonian music-related institutions. Since 1999 EMIC is a member of the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC) and is funded by the Estonian Ministry of Culture.

Scoremusic at Carnegie Hall for Arvo Pärt’s 90th Anniversary Celebrations

Scoremusic has recently returned home to Tallinn after a remarkable journey to New York, where Arvo Pärt’s 90th anniversary was celebrated at Carnegie Hall. The concerts brought together the Estonian Festival Orchestra led by Paavo Järvi, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste, in an unforgettable tribute to one of Estonia’s most beloved composers.

The Estonian Festival Orchestra adopted Scoremusic for the first time while preparing for its international tour, which culminated in a debut at Carnegie Hall. The ability to share digital scores instantly proved crucial for everyone, as many of the orchestral members are based worldwide, thus enabling efficient preparation, seamless rehearsal coordination, and synchronized markings across continents.

Critical-Performing Edition of Stanford's Orchestral Song Cycles

Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1927) wrote two cycles of songs for baritone with orchestra and chorus, setting nautical verses by the popular poet Henry Newbolt. From its premiere at the Leeds Musical Festival in October 1904, Songs of the Sea was a great success; Songs of the Fleet followed in 1910 and was transparently modeled on it (even quoting from the earlier work). Both works demonstrate Stanford’s mastery of orchestral technique and sureness of touch. Newbolt’s texts alternate between heroic and sentimental moods; Stanford responded with music that is dramatic and atmospheric—indeed, with some of the most remarkable textures of his whole oeuvre.

A Sea Symphony: New Critical Edition

Prepared by David Matthews, with the generous support of The Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust, the new edition presents a number of key updates to the orchestration and has been meticulously re-engraved.

The mountain drama THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (director: Arnold Fanck; actors: Luis Trenker, Leni Riefenstahl and others), which premiered on 2 December 1926, is available in the ARTE Mediathek until 2 March 2025. The original music by Edmund Meisel, which only exists as a piano score, was re-orchestrated and synchronised by Bernd Thewes for the restored film version (Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung). The Hessischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frank Strobel premiered this version in February 2024 in the hr-Sendesaal in Frankfurt am Main.

Australian Composer, Paul Dean, Signs to Wise Music Group

Discovering Hans Werner Henze: 100th Birthday 1st July 2026

Born in Perth, he studied piano with Stephen Dornan and composition with John Exton at the University of Western Australia. Moving to Sydney in 1975, he worked as a freelance pianist and composer with a wide range of ensembles, theatre and dance companies over the following decades.

Premiere of Shawn Okpebholo's orchestral Two Black Churches

On May 18, Lexington Philharmonic presented the world premiere of Two Black Churches (for baritone soloist and orchestra) by composer Shawn E. Okpebholo. Originally composed as a song cycle for baritone and piano, this new orchestration debuts with acclaimed soloist Will Liverman, under conductor Mélisse Brunet.

The work is a musical reflection of two significant and tragic events in two black churches, each perpetrated at the hands of white supremacists: the racist attacks on the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015.

Two Black Churches (for baritone and orchestra) was co-commissioned by The Lexington Philharmonic, Mélisse Brunet, Music Director, and supported by the Saykaly Garbulinska Composer-in-Residence Program. It was also composed for the Oakland Symphony, Kedrick Armstrong, Music Director, in honor of Michael Morgan, Music Director Laureate. This was made possible through an initiative led by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Symphony aimed at commissioning Black American composers, and the generous support of Laurence and Michèle Corash.
